Atomic Fun was the theme for last years 50′s Fair and fun it certainly was.
A beautiful Sunny Winter’s Day spent at one of my favourite Mid- century Modern Sydney Properties. The Rose Seidler House in Wahroonga was Architect Harry Seidler’s first Australian commission an open plan minimal design with all of the mod-cons of the day. It is one of Sydney’s finest examples of modern domestic architecture and has been a highly influential house, stimulating much intellectual comment and social debate.
The Historical House Trust are the caretakers of this amazing property opening the house for public tours every Sunday throughout the year , But On the last Sunday in August they host a much bigger celebration. The 50′s fair is an important annual date in Sydney’s Vintage Calender and everyone always dresses in their Sunday best for a day at the fair. I have been involved with the fair for the last decade and Last year I was given the difficult job of Co-Judging the best dressed fashion awards. Luckily the charming and cheeky Limpin Jimmy was on hand to assist with the task. I was really impressed with the effort that everyone had gone to , dressing in a gorgeous collection of authentic fashion and the children’s parade evoked many contented sighs from a sentimental crowd.
A Live Music Soundtrack was provided by the Harmonious Hillbilly’s from Melbourne the Rechords and Sydney’s swing sensation The Velvet Set. Lanie Lane even treated visitors to an Acoustic set upon arrival. There were DJ’s , Dancing and dealers selling specialist 50′s collectables and vintage treasures. Vintage Allsorts roving performers entertained the crowds with a fun 50′s Housewife Installation and The Swingtime Dancers provided a floorshow showcasing the history of Swing and rock ‘n’roll dancing.
This years fair will fall on Sunday the 28th August. I will be sure to update details on this site but just in case you want more info be sure to visit the HHT Myspace page dedicated to the event.
Hope to see you at the fair!
